Fishing
As one of the largest rivers in the Northwest, Columbia is the home of numerous species of large game fish that draw in anglers from across the entire continent. Some major species of game fish in the Columbia River include white sturgeon, chinook salmon, bull trout, rainbow trout, lake trout, brown trout, common carp, grass carp, channel catfish, brown bullhead, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and walleye. There are also numerous other species such as a variety of panfish. One of the most popular game fish among fisherman is the chinook salmon. The best way to catch this species is through trolling at a speed of 3 to 5 miles per hour. Large spoons and anchovies are usually the best set-ups for chinook salmon. Spinners and jigs can also be used when casting from the side of a boat.

Some of the best places for Chinook fishing in the Columbia River include the Gorge, the Dalles Pool, and the area between Portland and Westport. Rainbow trout are also commonly targeted by anglers of the Columbia River. Since this species prefers cold, moving water, many trout can be found at the beginning of the Columbia River. This is where fresh water from Columbia Lake flows into the Columbia River. As fly rods are most successful when targeting rainbow trout, this area is frequented by fly fishermen that fish from boats or wade in the shallows.

Bass fishermen will find that the Columbia River is one of the best locations because both largemouth and smallmouth bass can be found in high abundance. The largemouth bass are best found deep inside of the Gorge. They can be found in the weedy areas, around large rocks, and near other good hiding spots. Light tackle such as jigs, spinners, and crankbaits should be used. Smallmouth bass reside in the same kinds of hiding spots, however they can be found in large numbers near the Gorge's entrance. For fishermen of more casual preferences, bluegill and species of sunfish can be found throughout the entirety of the Columbia River in areas of shallow water and vegetation.
Facilities
Since the Columbia River stretches through the greater portion of two large states, there are many facilities available depending on a fisherman's location. Facilities are most readily available on the portion of the Columbia near Portland, Oregon. These facilities include marinas, harbors, piers, paved boat landings, tackle shops, grocery stores, fueling stations, and lodging. Fishermen will find that these can make trips easy to plan and more enjoyable.
Size and Characteristics
With a total length of 1,243 miles, the Columbia River is the fourth largest river in the United States. It starts at its source, the Columbia Lake, and snakes through the Rocky Mountains and two states until it reaches the Pacific Ocean. The Columbia River's size allows it to support large and healthy populations of game fish.

The Columbia River is a location that should be visited by every fisherman with a passion for freshwater game or beautiful views.
