Fishing
Due to the numerous species of large game that can be found in Shasta Lake, many fishermen will travel very far for a chance to take part in one of the many fishing adventures Shasta has to offer. Species of game fish found in Shasta Lake include rainbow trout, white sturgeon, brown trout, chinook salmon, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, brown bullhead, spotted bass, crappie, sunfish, and shad. Many species of panfish can also be captured at Shasta Lake. One of the most common targets of Shasta Lake fishermen is the rainbow trout. This species of fish is common throughout fresh bodies of water in the West and has a high abundance in Shasta. The best location to target this species is in the area directly in front of the turbulent water of the Shasta Dam. Rainbow trout prefer cold, moving water, so this is an ideal location for the species. Fishermen will find that fly rods are effective for catching this species of trout. The chinook salmon is also a favorite among Shasta fishermen. This species can be captured during all four seasons using trolling methods. Trolling should be done at a speed of 2 to 5 miles per hour. Fishermen will find that frozen herring and large spoons are the best setups for chinook fishing. For fisherman seeking a large challenge, the white sturgeon is a very difficult target that is a favorite among seasoned anglers. This species can grow beyond 1,500 pounds and can easily break a fisherman's line if an appropriate strategy is not applied. Fishermen should target the deep waters of Shasta Lake using a line with a test of 40 to 60 pounds. Once hooked, the sturgeon must be fought to the point of exhaustion before it can be captured. Largemouth bass fishermen also find that Shasta Lake is a great location for fishing. When targeting largemouth bass, anglers should travel to the southern side of the lake and cast near the aquatic vegetation or other debris. Light tackle such as jigs, buzzbaits, or crankbaits should be used for best results. Anglers will also find that Shasta Lake offers a decent selection of smaller game fish that make for excellent family fishing trips.
