Located in an area of southwestern Wyoming known for its beautiful canyons, Flaming Gorge Reservoir is one of the best locations for fishermen in search of an excellent view and an equally exciting day on the water.  Flaming Gorge Reservoir is an artificial body of water located off of the Green River and is formed by the Flaming Gorge Dam. Anglers who visit this popular location should be prepared for one of the Southwest’s most incredible fishing experiences.

The opportunities for fishing in Flaming Gorge Reservoir are numerous due to a wide selection of abundant game fish.  Some of Flaming Gorge’s species can offer a worthy challenge to even the most experienced of fishermen.  The game species of Flaming Gorge Reservoir include brown trout, rainbow trout, lake trout, kokanee salmon, channel catfish, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass.  The species of trout found in Flaming Gorge Reservoir can usually be successfully targeted in the areas of the lake where water enters and exits.  Because of this, fishermen in search of trout should focus on the confluence of the Blacks Fork and Green River and the area of water near the Flaming Gorge Dam. Targeting these areas using a flies and fly rods is an effective method for capturing Flaming Gorge largemouth bass.  During drought conditions, fishermen should target the deeper waters of these areas.  Under normal conditions, fishing near the shoreline is just as effective.  The smallmouth bass is another commonly targeted favorite.  Fishermen should target vegetation and obstacles such as submerged timber and boulders in order to find smallmouth bass.  The weed beds near Halfway Hollow and Wildhorse are often excellent locations for bass fishing.  The kokanee salmon of Flaming Gorge Reservoir can also be targeted in several of the lake’s locations.  In order to target this species, fishermen should troll the open waters of Flaming Gorge using large spoons and anchovies.  The most ideal locations include the deep waters near Flaming Gorge Dam and Horseshoe Canyon. Channel catfish is another popular species that anglers frequently target.  Fishermen will find that this species can be found throughout the entire lake in deep fishing holes.  Anglers can find this species quite easily by searching for fishing holes with depth finders and by using a bottom rig equipped with catfish hooks and stink baits.

Flaming Gorge Reservoir has a total surface area of 42,020 acres.  The maximum depth of the lake is 436 feet.
