Fishing
The Red River is filled with some of the best opportunities for freshwater fishing in the entire United States. Anglers will be able to target both docile small game fish and fighting trophy fish using a variety of fishing methods. Some of the major game fish species of the Red River include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bream, crappie, channel catfish, blue catfish, flathead, catfish, pickerel, perch, common carp, and alligator gar. The largemouth bass is a species that is commonly targeted by many fishermen who visit the Red River. This species can be found in large abundance throughout the southern portion of the river. When targeting largemouth bass, fishermen should target areas where the river extends into the woods. Once in these areas, anglers should find weed beds, stumps, or other debris where largemouth bass tend to hide in wait of prey. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jigs, and buzzbaits are all excellent tackle options for largemouth bass fishermen. Smallmouth bass can be found in the south, but there is a dense population of the species in the northern portion of the Red River. Like their largemouth relatives, the smallmouth bass can be found residing wooded areas and in coves. Weed beds and areas of debris are excellent places to target. Fishermen can target the smallmouth bass using topwater lures, jigs, or bobbers for optimal results. Fly rods may also be used. While this species is commonly captured at weights of 2 to 3 pounds, smallmouth bass have weighed in at 4 to 5 pounds on occasion. Due to the potentially large size of smallmouth bass, fishermen should equip their rods with a line of 5 to 12 pound test. The bream is a species that offers excitement to anglers during the warmer months of the year. This game fish can be commonly found in areas in the shallow waters of the various oxbows throughout the river. Crickets and red worms are the bait of choice for many professional bream fishermen. Light tackle such as topwater lures, jigs, and bobbers can be used to successfully capture bream. For fishermen in search of some large game fish, the many species of catfish in the Red River will offer an exciting adventure. Most varieties of catfish can be found throughout the Red River in deep waters. Anglers should target channels or deep holes throughout the waterway. Bottom rigs equipped to medium weight rods with a line of 15 to 20 pound test is the best setup available. Ideal bait choices include anchovies, blood worms, nightcrawlers, and stink baits.
