Fishing
As the merging location of two major rivers, the San Joaquin River Delta offers excellent opportunities for anglers. Species are abundant and tend to grow to large sizes due to the healthy waters. Major game species in the river delta include bluegill, redear sunfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass, crappie, bullhead catfish, channel catfish, shad, salmon, steelhead, white sturgeon, and green sturgeon.

These species present unique adventures to every fisherman who seeks them, as each fish requires a unique method for capture. The green and white sturgeon are fish that are popular among fishermen who desire a true challenge; these large species require a bit of skill to reel in and will likely break even strong lines if the right strategy is not used. The green sturgeon grows to 350 pounds while the white sturgeon has been known to grow beyond 1,500 pounds. Fishermen should use a heavy weight rod equipped with braided line. The ideal test is 40 to 50 pounds. Wire leaders with sliding sinkers should be used. Sturgeon are best caught during the Spring in deep fishing holes.

The Rio Vista bridge is one of the best locations sturgeon fishermen can target. The striped bass is also a popular species among fishermen. Fishermen targeting this species should use a boat to reach an area of water about a mile and a half north of Brannan Island. Once here, lures such as the 3 to 7 inch Rapalas and Rebels should be used. The ideal bait for striped bass is shad, anchovies, and different selections of cut baits. A line with at least a 20 pound test should be used. As another local favorite, the catfish species are commonly targeted throughout the San Joaquin River Delta. These fish can be caught throughout the entire delta, but Georgianam Cache, Miner Sloughs, and Threemile are all particularly good locations.

Fishermen should use a 10 to 20 pound test equipped with a bottom rig. Decent baits include anchovies, clams, stink baits, or anything that produces a strong scent. The catfish populations are in high abundance throughout the entire year, but Summer is the prime time for most catches. Smallmouth bass are prevalent throughout the delta and can be found in high abundance along the shoreline. The areas around Miner Sloughs are thick with logs, weeds, and other hiding spots that are perfect targets for bass fishermen. Fishermen should use light tackle such as jigs, spinners, or topwater baits. Fly rods are also excellent for catching smallmouth bass. Numerous panfish such as bluegill and sunfish can be caught along the shoreline of the entire San Joaquin River Delta using light tackle such as jigs and topwater baits. There are fishing opportunities for anglers of all styles and preferences.
