Fishing
Lake Powell offers an enormous selection of freshwater fish that attract anglers from across the Southwest and the entire United States. Large trophy fish and smaller species of game fish can both be found at this reservoir. The major game species of Lake Powell include striped bass, walleye, channel catfish, common carp, northern pike, largemouth bass, and smallmouth bass. One of the most common targets among Lake Powell's fishermen is the largemouth bass. This is a species that can grew to a strong fighting size and offers a fun challenge to some of the most experienced fishermen. Unlike many lakes in the rest of the United States, Lake Powell is essentially a flooded canyon. This means that it is very rocky and is full of nooks and crannies. These characteristics make Lake Powell excellent for largemouth bass fishing, as this species prefers a good hiding spot over the open water. These various holes and rock formations can be found throughout most of the lake, so largemouth bass fishing is ideal in a widespread area. Fishermen in search of largemouth bass should cast a line in one of these locations. Light tackle such as topwater lures, buzz baits, spinners, and jigs are the best options for the largemouth bass of Lake Powell. The walleye is also a species that is popular. Fishermen can find this species in the deep waters of Lake Powell throughout the year. The best method of capture is through the use of spinners and crankbaits. This species can put up a strong fight, so it is necessary to equip a rod with line that has a test of 10 to 15 pounds. For those fishermen interested in some trolling action, Lake Powell has a particularly high abundance of northern pike. This species is found in the deep waters of Lake Powell and can be caught by trolling the waters with spoons or spinner baits. The ideal speed is usually between two and five miles per hours, but speeds as fast as six miles per hour can sometimes be used during the Summer. Fishermen who visit Lake Powell should be sure to try a variety of baits and tackle in order to experience all that the fish community has to offer.
