Fishing
Any angler who has visited Okoboji knows that the lake provides an excellent abundance of game fish that make for an exciting day on the water. Fishermen should be sure to plan ahead and prepare because, depending on the intended target, the recommended tackle can vary significantly. Some of Okoboji's major species include bluegill, walleye, muskie, northern pike, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, and crappie. All of these game fish thrive due to the healthy, hospitable waters of Okoboji Lake. The largemouth bass is a species of game fish that is frequently targeted in freshwater lakes and rivers across the entire globe; Okoboji Lake is no exception. Fishermen travel wide and far in order to partake in Okoboji's bass fishing opportunities. During the Spring, bass fishermen should search for largemouth near the shoreline. This species tends to reside in areas on the edge of weed beds and near drop-offs. Fishermen should use a boat to target deeper waters during the Summer and Fall. There are many ideal tackle options that are successful for largemouth bass captures, but light tackle such as buzz baits and diving crankbaits are the best options at Okoboji Lake. Smallmouth bass have a higher abundance than the largemouth variety during most of the year. This species should be targeted in the shallow waters of Okoboji Lake during the warm months of the year at weed beds and logs near the shoreline. A good place to start searching is in gaps in the vegetation. Topwater lures and other light tackle choices are usually effective. Ideal baits include nightcrawlers and artificial worms. For fishermen in search of a more unique fishing opportunity, Okoboji Lake is home to an average abundance of walleye. This fish is commonly caught at the 8 to 11 pound range and offers a strong challenge. Walleye are found in the deepest waters of Okoboji during 12 months of the year and can be caught on light tackle. The most effective options include crankbaits and jigs. While panfish such as bluegill are often favorites of children and families, Okoboji Lake is home to some large ones that will put up a fight. Bluegills are consistently caught in the 7 to 9 inch range and offer an exciting fight to anglers. In order to find this species, anglers should search the area near piers and the shoreline. Light tackle such as jigs are usually the most effective. Both northern pike and muskie are species that can be effectively caught using trolling methods. A trolling speed of 2 to 6 miles per hour is ideal with large spoons or brightly colored lures. These species can put up quite the fight, so fishermen should use a heavy test and exhaust the fish before reeling it in.
