Fishing
As a large lake, Pickwick Lake has plenty of space for its fish species to thrive and expand their populations. Many trophy fish have been captured at Pickwick Lake throughout the years. Notable species of fish that can be caught at Pickwick Lake include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, stripers, and catfish. Pickwick Lake is most known for its smallmouth bass population. Several size records have been broken for this species and Pickwick and the population continues to grow each year. The smallmouth bass population is so renowned at Pickwick that even the famous Bassmaster Tournament is held here annually. The methods for catching smallmouth are similar to catching any other fish that resides in shallow water. Fishermen should find a location that the bass may be hiding. This can include vegetation like hydrilla, large rocks, logs, or any other obstructions that may provide a good habitat. Once a decent location is found an angler can cast his or her preferred tackle. Many fishermen will agree that the easiest way to capture a smallmouth bass is by using light tackle, spinners, jigs, or crank baits. For experienced anglers who enjoy a challenge, fly fishing is also an option. Stripers are also fish that are quite popular among fishermen. This species can be caught using trolling methods. The best speed for trolling is about 5 miles per hour. The striper gives a strong fight and is very fun to catch. Anglers can also enjoy fishing for several species of catfish using bottom rigs and stink baits. Fishing seasons in Pickwick Lake are longer due to the warm climate. Several species of smaller fish that do not put up a very hard fight are also available. These are excellent for casual fishermen and those on family fishing trips.
