Walleye is a species found throughout the waterways of the United States. In Spirit Lake, there is an average abundance of walleye that can be caught throughout the entire year. During the Spring, walleye move to the shallow sand beds of Spirit Lake to spawn. This presents an opportunity for fishermen to find a dense population of walleye in one area. Throughout the rest of the year, anglers should resort to fishing in the deep waters of Spirit Lake. Ice fishing is also an option during the coldest months of Winter. Crankbaits, spinners, and other light tackle options are great choices when targeting walleye. Smallmouth bass can be caught between the months of April and October in shallow waters. Spinnerbaits are the most effective tackle option for catching muskie. Trolling at a speed of 2 to 5 miles per hour is idea. There are many fishermen who enjoy a casual day on the water with family. For these individuals, panfish such as crappie and bluegill are great targets. Both of these species can be found in an above average abundance. Anglers searching for these targets should fish off of the shoreline. The various piers at Spirit Lake are also great places to target panfish. Topwater lures, jigs, and bobbers are all ideal tackle options.
