Fishing
Theodore Roosevelt Lake presents excellent opportunities to anglers due to the numerous and diverse populations of game fish. Some of these fish are trophy fighters while others are docile targets. The major species of Theodore Roosevelt Lake include crappie, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, sunfish, flathead catfish, channel catfish, and carp. As in most freshwater fishing locations, the largemouth bass population is among the most popular targets. Fishermen seeking this species should search the deep waters and areas around rock formations. Once in an ideal location, light tackle such as jigs, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, and buzzbaits should be used. If the largemouth bass are not biting, fishermen should result to chumming the waters. Largemouth bass chum can be found in bait shops for this purpose. If that is not an option, canned corn from the grocery store works just as well. The smallmouth bass is also a common target among Theodore Roosevelt Lake fishermen. As with most lakes, smallmouth bass tend to reside in coves and near weed beds. One of the best locations for smallmouth bass fishing at Theodore Roosevelt Lake is in a cove that can be found in an island at the center of the lake. This area is sheltered from the wind and fast moving waters and thus, offers the perfect habitat for smallmouth bass. Light tackle options such as jigs and topwater lures are usually the most effective for catching smallmouth bass. Fly rods are also an excellent option. There are also many possibilities for catching catfish. Both flathead and channel catfish can be found in a high abundance at Theodore Roosevelt Lake. In order to effectively catch catfish, it is necessary to find a deep fishing hole. The many deep holes formed by the underwater rock formations are excellent catfish habitats to target. In order to find these locations without any prior knowledge, it is necessary to use a fishfinder. Once an ideal location has been established, a bottom rig should be used. Good baits include stink baits, anchovies, chicken livers, cheese, and most baits that emit a strong odor. For all targets, fishermen should avoid fishing during the middle of the day during the Summer; the temperature can reach high heats that greatly decrease the chance of catching a fish. During this season, fishing should be limited to the evening, night, and morning.
